Mazi Chibuike Jonas, a former Arochukwu Local Government Chairman and Abia 2023 Governorship Candidate, has sounded a note of caution to Governor Alex Otti, urging him to exercise restraint and ensure a level playing field for all political stakeholders in Abia State as the 2027 contests approach. In a statement, Mazi Jonas, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Renewed Hope Partners in Abia State, emphasized the importance of ranchor-free politics in maintaining peace and stability in the state.
“I want to advise Governor Otti to tread carefully and create space for all political players in Abia State,” Mazi Jonas said. “It is crucial that we nurture a culture of mutual respect, tolerance, and fairness in our political engagements, this is what the Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu has always advocated for in his numerous meetings with Gov. Otti, even before me. He is a man of peace that desire progress of Abia State at all times. Therefore, government’s actions should be geared towards serving the people, and not targeting individuals or groups.”
Mazi Jonas’ appeal comes against the backdrop of rising tensions between the Abia State Government and the Renewed Hope Partners (RHP), who has accused the government of showing blatant disregard for President Tinubu by undermining activities of the Renewed Hope Agenda in Abia state. The RHP has cited instances, including the sealing of their office in Umuahia and the revocation of a Memorandum of Understanding with a private company, as examples of the government’s alleged vendetta against them.
As a seasoned politician, Mazi Jonas stressed that politics should focus on addressing the pressing issues affecting the state, rather than engaging in acrimonious exchanges and power struggles. “We should be working together to find solutions to the challenges facing our state, rather than using power to suppress opposition or silence critics,” he said.
Mazi Jonas’ call for calm and a level playing field has been welcomed by many in Abia State, who are eager to see a more inclusive and peaceful political environment. His statement is seen as a timely reminder of the importance of statesmanship and the need for leaders to prioritize the welfare of the people above personal or partisan interests.
