In response to the longstanding demands for the creation of a Southeast Development Commission to address the region’s monumental challenges, President Bola Tinubu has signed the bill into law. This milestone confirms the administration’s commitment to expanding social and infrastructural development across the nation.
The new Commission is expected to address the region’s historical neglect, dating back to the civil war era, by providing essential infrastructural facilities that will boost the national economy. Our advocacy groups have consistently urged the government to establish this Commission, and we are thrilled to see it become a reality through the 10th National Assembly.
We commend the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, for his tireless efforts, resilience, and audacity in championing this life-changing project throughout the legislative process. His leadership has demonstrated a genuine commitment to the well-being of his people.
In conclusion, we applaud the government for this significant achievement and advise that experienced and corrupt-free individuals be selected to manage the new Commission. This will ensure that the Commission’s original purposes are not compromised, and its impact is felt by the people of the Southeast region.
